To be a successful soldier you must know history. . . . What you must know is how man reacts. Weapons change but man who uses them changes not at all. To win battles you do not beat weapons you beat the soul of man of the enemy man.-- General George S. Patton, Jr.George S. Patton, Jr., born into an affluent California family in 1885, knew in early youth that his future lay in the military past of his ancestors. After graduating from West Point and placing 5th in the 1912 Olympics pentathlon, he became military aide to General Pershing during the Mexican Expedition, served as Tank Corps captain in World War I, and went on to lead Allied armies to stunning victories during the Second World War. Promoted to 4-star general by war's end, he was acknowledged our best general by America's vanquished enemies and acclaimed by Americans as a hero.
From his earliest days hunting and fishing in the California outback to his ironic death in an automobile accident at war's end in Germany, Historic Photos of General George Patton captures the greatest exploits of one of the nation's greatest combat generals. Patton's life in pictures blazes a trail sure to enthrall every reader, from the student of history to the history buff.
Patton became and remains an American icon. The hundreds of photographs in Historic Photos of General George Patton, all of them commanding the reader to attention and many of them riveting it, help Americans more than sixty years after the end of Patton's last war to understand why.

See the real man behind the legend rather than relying on the movie
by .. Craig Matteson (Ann Arbor, MI)
Frankly, when most people think of George Patton they see George C. Scott with images from the movie and they hear Scott's voice as if it were Patton's. This is a tremendous compliment to the filmmakers, but all films have to adapt reality to fit into a two or three hour story. This book provides a couple of hundred pictures of the real Patton from his childhood to his grave and statuary. The text by Russ Rodgers provides helpful captions and introductions four sections of the book: Youth through the end of World War I, between the wars, 1942-1943, and 1944-1945.
I particularly like the way Rodgers acknowledges how our perceptions of Patton are tied to the film and corrects some of the misperceptions we have from the film with these pictures and captions. The way he points out details in the pictures such as insignia, equipment, and even the way the men are standing and the manner in which they are dressed to help us understand what the picture is actually showing us is fascinating stuff. Without his drawing attention to these details the pictures would have spoken to me in a much more muted voice.
While I love the film, the Patton that emerges here is actually more interesting, more human, and much more understandable. I like the way the author points out that Patton forced himself to experience war at the front because he was afraid he would lose his nerve if he didn't push himself into it regularly.
This is a nicely printed book and quite interesting for anyone interested in Patton. Recommended.

Photographic Patton History Like No Other.
by .. Anthony Accordino (Massapequa Park, New York United States)
Lets face it, General George S. Patton, Whether you like him or not, is regarded as the greatest American battlefield commander of WW-2, and certainly goes down in military history as one of the most famous warriors of any generation. Russ Rodgers has compiled a lavishly illustrated large format coffee table book that will make any military historian or student of WW-2, proud to own this book. This 200 page plus collection of photo's, captures General Patton during every phase of his life, with the lions share of course depicting his pivitol role in WW-2. Some of these photo's have obviously been seen before, but many prized never before seen photo's are seen for the first time. There is little text throughout, with the exception of a few small paragraphs, before each of the four chapters. Each photo however, is explained, and more importantly, Mr. Rodgers identify's almost every soldier that is with Patton in the photo's, well known or not. Just a fabulous photographic collection of Patton history, layed out in chronilogical order. Keep in mind, that this is only a photographic history, and not a biography loaded with copious amounts of information, that is easlily found in the many available Patton biographies that are currently available. I recommend Martin Blumenson's "The Patton Papers", Vol-1 and Vol-2, and Carlos D'este's "Patton A Genious For War", if you are looking for a detailed read on the subject of Patton. As a World War Two buff, I regard this Photograhic history as one of the finest books that I own, and is worthy of any military library.
