As the adventures of the female vigilante posse the Knight Sabers conclude, director Hiroko Hiyashi has too little story to fill too much time, and the last five episodes feel padded. In "Hydra," the increasingly powerful and insane Galatea somehow "merges her consciousness" with the skyscraper of the Genom Company, transforming it into a likeness of herself and launching it into space. Her objective is the Showhamm Project, a network of solar energy-collecting satellites: controlling them will enable her to spread madness among Boomer robots throughout world and make herself the master of mankind. Sylia, from whose tissue Galatea was created and who has sworn to destroy her, withdraws from the conflict, leaving Nene, Linna, and Priss to save the planet. The filmmakers try for an Evangelion-style metaphysical ending. The Knight Sabers suddenly develop the power to bond with the hard suits that give them superpowers, and instead of destroying Galatea, they cause her to merge with the universe; she rains onto the Earth as a shower of glittering particles. The Bubblegum Crisis series owes its popularity to no-holds-barred action and tough, capable female characters, not theological/philosophical speculations. "Suggested 15 Up" for violence, profanity, and nudity; alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Very few movies (much less anime)... 5 by .. ()
...actually have the power to bring me to tears. BGC 2040 is one of them. After getting the first DVD of this series, I was hooked. Two months (and close to $200 dollars poorer) later, I finished watching the last disc. This series is an epic tale (climaxing with the last 5 episodes) of sacrifice, discovering one's self, coming to accept the nature of your enemy, and (what anime would be complete without:) love. By the end of this series, I felt empathy for the characters...even the ones who were meant to be the villains. To be honest, I haven't seen the original series (but I am meaning to). On a more technical note: the animation all throughout the 5 episodes is absolutely wonderful. This is definitely a series worth watching if you are new to anime, and a must for anybody who is a current anime fan.

The series finale - Awesome! 5 by .. Dennis A. Amith (kndy) (California)
This DVD marks the final DVD of the Bubblegum Crisis 2040 series featuring TV episodes 22-24 and OAV 1-2. What that means that in Japan, everyone who watched the TV series had to wait for the true final ending when it was released as OAV's.

The storyline now has the Knightsabers kicked out of their building which was taken over by Galatea and the Boomers. The Knightsabers find a few more people who are trapped in Tokyo. This is the final battle between the Knightsabers and Galatea and also what happens to Mackie? You have to watch and find out. Also, this DVD answers the question if about Priss and Leon.

Although the finale may present more questions than answers, I am guessing the creators wanted the viewer to make their own conclusions or wait until the next series or OAV's are released.

As for the DVD itself, similar to the rest, looks and sounds great. As for the final two OAV's, since it's not television, they spent a little more on the final episodes and unlike the TV series, there is nudity. As for special features, there is the voice actress profiles but I'm not sure why not all of them are included. Also, still can't find the ADVfilm CM's for the other anime.

All in all, a great series and pretty bummed that the ride is over. Check it out!

Better than the original 5 by .. M. Maitzen (Indianapolis, IN USA)
I will not review the plot here as there are plenty of other places to get that info. I just want to say that I thought this version of Bubblegum Crisis and the Knight Sabers was better than the original series. I know there are plenty of purists that will argue with me on this and the orignal series was the anime that got me interested in anime. Still this series has a much better and more consistant storyline than the original and, or course, has more time in which to develop the story.
The ending of the series, which this DVD is about, is more philosophical than most but I found that refreshing. It was more of a conclusion than the original series.
I do wish the publishers had added more interesting information in the extra features, though. The character profiles were OK but I have come to expect so much more on DVD.

Knights In Spaaaaaace 5 by .. L. Mintah (USA)
Like all good series, Bubblegum Crisis 2040 must come to an end. The final DVD is packed with five action-packed episodes. Galatea morphs with the Genom Tower and takes off into space. The Knight Sabers must find a way to follow her. But how can they do that in a deserted Tokyo taken over by Boomers? Even if they can get to space, how can they hope to defeat a machine queen who speaks machine language and has declared herself God? Especially considering the Knight Sabers hardsuits are really boomers themselves . . .

Aside from Galatea giving her shape to the tower top (how corny is that?), the last volume is as philosophical and character-driven as it is sci-fi action. Lots of thoughtful dialouge. I highly recommend this DVD as well as the entire series.

Sylia Stingray is my hero. If I ever cosplay, I want to be her.

Loved finding these holes on the complete series, very happy and the seller even refunded some of the shipping, would definitely order from again!
