Director Koichi Chigira cranks up the action and the comedy as a new enemy appears in this rambunctious adventure. The terrorist cell A21 has a murderous pawn in Takuma, who uses the mysterious Lambda Drive to control a gargantuan crimson mecha. Sousuke defeats him in a dynamic duel, aided by Kaname and Commander Teletha "Tess" Testarossa. But the effects-laden battle is just a prelude to a more subtle but more dangerous conflict: Tess announces she's fallen for Sgt. Sousuke, and "may the best girl win!" Fortunately, Sousuke is too dense to notice. Assertive, independent, and capable of initiating action, Kaname represents new breed of magical girl. She never whines, the way Hitomi does in Escaflowne, and she's quite capable of braining Sousuke when he sticks his foot in it for the umpteenth time.
