The first in war, Patton would have been lost in peace, this tape doesn't capture much of his dynamic personality
by .. Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com))
There is no question that George Patton was the best American fighting general of the Second World War. Although he was as egocentric as the pompous McArthur, Patton never preened for anyone; Patton was more likely to swear at them to get the *** out of his way. War was his life, he never thought of anything other than aggressively attacking and destroying the enemy.
This tape, using and reusing vintage combat footage, is more a history of the actions of Patton's unit than Patton himself, who rarely appears on screen. This footage is not well described; from the helmets and guns it appeared that footage of German units was sometimes being used. Little mention is made of the rivalries between Patton and the other allied generals and nothing about Patton's other very famous actions. There is a short tape of a speech he gives in the United States after the war and in it Patton is halting and uncertain. There is none of the verbal bluster that was so masterfully done by George C. Scott in the movie.
The history novice will actually learn very little about the personality and life of George S. Patton from this tape. I found it to be a significant disappointment.
