A TREASURE to start your Incredible Journey
by .. Jadzia, Ph.D. (Vancouver BC)
Breastfeeding Comprehensive is hands down the most informationally complete and beautifully produced breastfeeding DVD out there!
This DVD provides excellent preparation for breastfeeding and essential guidance once your incredible journey has begun. The DVD views more like a gripping documentary than a static instructional video. Anything you may want to know about breastfeeding at every phase of your baby's development is covered: why you should breastfeed, how to prepare, how to get started, how to solve any problems that arise, how to persist, father's important role, how to breastfeed and go back to work, pumping, breastfeeding preemies and babies with special medical needs, extended breastfeeding...
The depth and breadth of information and instruction in Breastfeeding Comprehensive make it essential preparation for new mothers and likewise an authoritative, comprehensive informational resource for any professionals involved with birth and breastfeeding.
An extensive panel of experts (Dr. William Sears!, World Health Organization, pediatricians, neonatologists, lactation consultants, midwives, birth educators, scientists, etc.) cover the vast health and emotional benefits of breastfeeding for baby and mom. The lactation consultants in the video provide clear instruction on the essentials of breastfeeding (proper latch, proper positioning, sucking patterns, etc.) as they guide new mothers and their babies on camera. There is a very useful section on how to address problems that may arise, etc.
I could have used these models when my first child and I struggled with breastfeeding (--hmm, maybe this had something to do with the fact that there was no lactation consultant on staff at the renowned teaching hospital where I gave birth). Although I had a book or two on breastfeeding, had taken a breastfeeding class while pregnant, and had consulted lactation consultants when the difficulties began I didn't get good modeling of what placement, position, and proper sucking should actually look like in real life. This video illustrates these things beautifully and can be watched repeatedly before and after birth as a model. I also think the information on how the breast makes milk is incredibly useful--this would have allayed a lot of my anxiety about sufficient milk production with my first child. (Fortunately I did understand the importance of breastfeeding for baby's and mommy's health, so we persisted through our difficulties and breastfed for a good long time.)
Experts and moms from all over the world present information on extended breastfeeding for those who might be interested. Working moms will appreciate the comprehensive section on pumping and returning to work. What I think is great about Breastfeeding Comprehensive is the balance between factual information and instruction, the gentle advice of pediatricians and others in the birth profession, and beautiful stories and insights shared by moms and dads from all over the world that will move you (sometimes to tears) and inspire you.
Also noteworthy: breastfeeding is covered from all angles--extensive info on the profound health benefits for mother and baby, instruction from experts, and also the "real story"--extensively covering the macro-level forces that oppose breastfeeding (powerful influence of formula companies, lack of adequate breastfeeding training among pediatricians, employer policies, societal norms, etc.) as well as demonstrating the forces that promote breastfeeding (nature, instinct, mother, baby, health benefits, baby friendly hospital initiative, good employer policies, pediatrician knowledge and support, etc.). An understanding of breastfeeding on the macro level will empower you with the knowledge to face these obstacles, to make choices that circumvent those obstacles, and to trust your own instincts as a mother.
This is a beautiful and inspiring DVD! There is a trailer to preview online at Mother of 7, Inc. Breastfeeding Basics and Breastfeeding Intensive are shorter versions of Breastfeeding Comprehensive.
Happy Breastfeeding!
Breastfeeding Comprehensive DVD
by .. Kathleen A. Lebbing ()
This breastfeeding DVD has it ALL. The name is perfect: Breastfeeding Comprehensive. This DVD is 130 minutes of the best breastfeeding class you will ever take. Even lactation consultants will benefit from what they will learn in this DVD.
As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant I strongly recommend this DVD. Not only are the basics covered, but viewers will learn that mothers can return to breastfeeding if they have had an untimely stopping through the process called relactation. Viewers will learn that adopted babies can be nursed. Special circumstances and topics such as breastfeeding multiple babies, breast surgery, milk banks, postpartum depression, breastfeeding in public, and how most medications are compatible for the nursing mother are discussed. Basic and advanced FAQs are answered.
This DVD also gets into global issues such as why the World Health Organization so stongly recommends breastfeeding, and how the US Department of Health and Human Services presented an Ad Campaign promoting breastfeeding. Formula marketing techniques are exposed, as NOT breastfeeding is a human rights issue. Baby Friendly Hospital certified hospitals are mentioned so viewers can learn that the location of birth can impact breastfeeding.
Maternity leaves in different countries are presented; and information on employment, breast pumps, and storage of human milk are given.
This DVD is for anyone who wants to learn as much as possible about breastfeeding: the management, the developmental stages, the special circumstances and the politics.
Pregnant moms and dads, grandmothers and other relatives, friends of couples having babies, and healthcare professionals - this DVD will teach you so much you will be beyond amazed! This DVD would be an excellent tool for educating hospital or clinic staff members about breastfeeding too.
Check out the other DVDs in this series too: the 20 minute "Breastfeeding Basics" and the 45 minute "Breastfeeding Intensive." I give this 10+ stars.
A Truly Fabulous DVD
by .. Pascal ()
A truly fabulous and comprehensive DVD. I wish I had seen it before
giving birth to my first baby and encountering huge latching problems.
I watched it as a refresher while expecting my second baby. I was
impressed by the vast array of health professionals--pediatricians,
lactation consultants, labour and delivery nurses as well as nursing
mothers and LaLeche League supporters who offer precious insight into
the sometimes confusing world of breastfeeding. I particularly
appreciated the emphasis on establishing a nursing support network
before giving birth. How I wish I had done this! The DVD also
explains the physiological aspects of milk production and the most
common nursing positions. Definitely a must see for expectant
mothers!!!

I learned from the video as well. It is a great resource for anyone. She covers all topics regarding breastfeeding in a very simple and easy to understand format. The video is long, 130 minutes, but it is broken down into shorter chapters.Every one of those 130 minutes is full of information. I think that anyone interested in breastfeeding whether it be mothers themselves or their partners and support persons, or grandparents should view this video. I highly recommend it to anyone.Lets teach the world about breastfeeding "One mother at a time"
