British singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae's star continues to rise with Live in London & New York, a combination DVD (the London concert) and CD (the New York gig, with the same songs in the same running order). Like many of the best artists of her generation, Rae has absorbed her various influences unself-consciously, and she knows intuitively which ones suit her own style. She might love Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, but by her own admission, Rae's voice lacks the sheer power and bravura chops of those and other diva wailers; thus it's the more intimate and dusky sound of Billie Holiday, another major inspiration, that reveals itself in her material (all of it written or co-written by Rae, with one exception). She might have been a rocker as a youngster--hence her tasty cover of Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You," during much of which she's accompanied by piano and acoustic bass only--but it's the sensibility of classic-period Stevie Wonder that comes through in Rae's exceptional melodies (like "Put Your Records On," probably her best-known tune at the time of these 2006 shows; there are also several numbers on which she accompanies herself on acoustic guitar) and gentle R&B shadings. Sade may also come to mind while one listens to Rae; although the latter's voice is somewhat more coarse (and occasionally mildly out of tune), she shares the former's penchant for the kind of sensuous and soulful pop music that will appeal to actual grownups. Add to that a winning, modest stage presence and a style that, influences notwithstanding, is genuinely her own, and Corinne Bailey Rae is a winner. DVD extras include four promo videos and a brief featurette. --Sam GrahamSimilarProduct
