This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. The Good Version of The Tombstone and Wyatt Earp Story

In my opinion, the Blu-ray format simply isn't for all movies or shows. For instance I don't see the sense in watching say, "Breakfast Club" in Blu-ray. That being said, this is definitely one of those movies that I was happy to see finally released on Blu-ray. I also feel the need to say that of the two movies that were released "Coincidentally" within the same time-frame this one is without doubt the better of the two, the other being the movie titled "Wyatt Earp" starring Kevin Costner. I suppose I just have this thing about Kevin Costner being in a movie, except I thought "Dances With Wolves" was a great movie, yet even then I find myself imagining different actors in that role, and well I'd probably cast Kurt Russell in that movie as well.
THE DVD and BLU-RAY FORMAT:
Sorry, getting back with Tombstone, from a Blu-ray standpoint I enjoyed the crisp detail and in contrast to another review felt that the Audio sounded great. I was, however, disappointed that the release did not include the Director's Cut and wonder why Blu-ray releases continue to make this mistake with excluding other versions since I as remember when the format had first debuted that extra content such as this was one of the great features of having so much more room.
THE MOVIE and CASTING:
As far as the movie and the story, this well so well cast that I was surprised that it didn't win just a ton of awards. Kurt Russel as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday was brilliant. This along with a cameo appearance of Charlton Heston and the remaining cast of Sam Elliot, Dana Delany, and Bill Paxton just to name a few recreated a legend that will forever mark what the Western Frontier and the rewards and sacrifices that came along with it was all about; A truly excellent film.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
A lot of people think my best friend looks exactly like Kevin Costner and I suppose I see the likeness. I also wonder what "Dances with Wolves" would have been like with say Christian Slater, James Spader, Edward James Olmos, or even Edward Norton?
I give Tombstone the Blu-ray version a 9 out of 10 - 1 point for not having the Director's Cut included.

I doubt that anyone will be ordering this Blu-Ray disc just for the sake of ordering Blu-Ray. If that were the case, why order THIS rather than some OTHER Blu-Ray? No, you're here because you're considering the movie, and that's what I will describe.
First, you should know that the film is historically very accurate. There are a few lines put into other people's mouths, or this guy escapes with his life when in reality it was that other guy, but you can pretty much find all those details in the trivia page for this film on the Internet Movie Database (www dot imdb dot com). Indeed, one of the potential weaknesses of the film is that it is so accurate a portrayal. It doesn't just lead up to the apocalyptic gun battle at the OK corral and end there, with the good guys winning; it follows the characters for years afterward, in most cases right up to the moment of their death. Along the way it portrays a number of unbelievable scenes that eyewitnesses confirmed as truth, not legend. What this means is that about the last 45 minutes of the movie may feel like it goes on too long. In fact, this long denouement gives "Tombstone" some of the wistful feel of "Unforgiven," another Western that does not glamorize violence.
Next, you should know that Val Kilmer takes the world to acting school in this film. As Doc Holliday he breathes so much life into this character that everyone else on screen seems to fade into the woodwork. Kurt Russell is an underrated actor; he's actually pretty bleeping good. But next to Val Kilmer he looks like a community theater extra next to Olivier. I have about a dozen scenes from this movie stuck in my head, as if they were engraved. One features Kurt Russell. The others all feature Kilmer. Among others, you should play and re-play and re-re-play the moment where Klimer says, "you may go now." It is the finest portrayal of polite contempt I have ever seen, live or on film.
Third, as Westerns go, you can take the first half or so as a good old-fashioned western and the second half as a more modern Greek tragedy. As long as you're up for that, this is one of the best films you could choose, which repays multiple viewings. If you want a western more like John Wayne and John Ford made, this probably isn't for you, but if you enjoy a postmodern Western morality play, you can't go wrong. Kudos for this re-release of a genuinely great film!

I just bought and watched the blu-ray version of Tombstone yesterday, and it was fantastic. Not only is it one of the best westerns ever made (historians claim Val Kilmer was the most complete embodiment of the real Doc Holliday), the blu-ray was so crisp and beautiful I felt like I was there at the OK Corral when it all went down. What a great screenplay, too! I can quote this movie all day long!
A must see, and a great addition to any blu-ray collection.

Great production values on this excellent flic finally reaching us after a long wait. The many long close-ups of the actors' faces are some of the delicious moments to savor on this disc. Truly an acting tour-de-force: Russel, Kilmer, Elliot, Paxton, Boothe, Biehn, Haden Church, Lang, and Heston ! One of the best man-filled flix for men and women alike. Great documentaries about the making of the flic with many pleasing anecdotes guaranteed to tickle the viewer's fancy. Great BR disc, buy it without delay.

Seeing this classic in blue-ray is a treat. The clarity is fantastic and makes an already entertaining flick more enjoyable. Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer (in my humble opinion, the best role Kilmer ever had), Bill Paxton and Sam Elliot make this movie come alive and joined with the likes of Powers Booth and a cast of outstanding character actors who finish the job with convincing and exciting gun play, fast horses, and bravado, the viewer will find themselves immeshed in the wild and wooly times of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. Excellent.
